Abstract

The development of graphic design is strongly influenced by technological developments. Before the digital era, to become a graphic designer required specific skills to master it, which was obtained through formal education or with certain stages, but the advent of the digital era allowed anyone to learn graphic design from various sources. This paper will show the determination of technology in the trajectory of graphic design development before and after the digital era. This research was conducted at the end of 2020 on students of the Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta as one of the providers of graphic design formal education or similar. Data on the pre-digital era were collected through interviews with relevant sources and literature studies. While the data about the post-digital period was collected by observing the subject directly in addition to interviewing several sources. The data were then analyzed with the theory of Technological Determinism.
