Abstract

Transportation is a critical element of modern society, facilitating the movement of people and goods from one place to another. In many developing countries, the lack of resources, infrastructure, and political will often hinder investment in transportation. In such contexts, informal and unregulated transportation services, commonly referred to as para-transit, play a vital role in providing affordable and accessible transportation options for many people, particularly in areas with limited access to formal transportation. This paper sheds light on Danfo, a type of para-transit in Lagos, Nigeria, which has become an integral part of the city's culture and transportation system. Despite being unregulated and unsafe, Danfos remain a popular means of transportation for many Lagosians. The paper explores the role of Danfos in Lagos, highlighting the potential of para-transit services in meeting the transportation needs of the population. Furthermore, it contributes to our understanding of transportation in developing countries, raising awareness about the limitations of formal public transportation systems and the potential of transformative transport services in enhancing the well-being of consumers. The study emphasizes the need for transportation solutions that are affordable, efficient, and sustainable, and highlights the potential of para-transit services in meeting these needs. Overall, the study provides theoretical and managerial implications for developing countries' transportation systems by highlighting the benefits and challenges of para-transit services such as Danfo.
