Abstract

This chapter analyses the employment of international visiting faculty that increases the internationalization of business education. By focusing on the “flying faculty” model, the chapter begins by describing the trend toward more contingent faculty arrangements in the context of the marketization of higher education. It then links the flying faculty approach to the literature on faculty recruitment and proposes a standardization-adaptation framework. It continues by presenting a study of an undergraduate program in international business located in Finland that relies almost entirely on international visiting faculty. Finally, it discusses the benefits and drawbacks of flying faculty in light of the case study and suggests a future research agenda.

Keywords: visiting faculty, flying faculty, faculty employment, internationalization, business education, standardization, adaptation, business schools, Finland
