Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly important role in almost all areas of business. Therefore, employees without a dedicated AI background will sooner or later be exposed to AI technologies or AI-based systems or services. Arguably, AI will impact the entire value creation chain, which is why AI education should be pursued on a broad scale to leverage the full potential of AI. To engage business and engineering students – the employees of tomorrow – with AI and provide them with the essential AI competencies, we propose an immersive “Proto AI Learning Factory” 1 concept where students – without or only with limited AI knowledge – can learn the basics of AI. Our learning factory concept is modular and extendable, with exemplary lessons on machine learning algorithms, natural language processing (NLP), and computer vision. Additionally, in the future, we plan to install a miniature production factory for showcasing AI in the manufacturing context aiming at transferring the general competencies to the specific use case of production, thereby creating insights for future didactics and learning concepts. In contrast to lecture-based learning, we elaborate on leveraging highly immersive augmented (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies to create a unique learning experience. To align with existing learning factories, we classify our concept according to a learning factory morphology.
