Abstract

Highlights• Significant changes in gross primary production (GPP) were observed in 34 out of 44 European terrestrial ecosystems during the spring of 2020, compared to the previous five years.• Increased solar irradiance by 10% contributed to the enhancement of GPP in 14 sites.• The decrease in GPP at 11 sites can be attributed to immediate and legacy effects of soil and atmospheric droughts.• Changes in atmospheric ozone concentration are unlikely to explain the observed GPP anomaly.
