Extraction and Characterization of Natural Pigment Curcumin: A Review

Curcumin, a pigment from turmeric, is one of the extremely few promising natural products that has been thoroughly studied from both a biological and chemical standpoint by researchers. Curcumin is a polyphenolic compound present in turmeric with other two curcuminoids. Curcumin due to its various medicinal, biological, pharamacological activities is high on demand and has high market potential, high cost. In this article, an overview of different aspects of the unique chemistry research on curcumin will be discussed. These include methods for the extraction from turmeric, chromatographic process and characterization of curcumin using HPLC, UV etc., and its applications.
