Bi2o3 Additive Effects on Gamma Radiation Shielding Properties of 45sio2-20b2o3-23na2o3-9cao-3al2o3 Glass
Abstract
Radiation causes so many problems to any creature, especially humankind; producing shielding materials is inevitable. This study investigated the glasses containing different quantities of SiO2 and B2O3, then 45SiO2-20B2O3-23Na2O3-9CaO-3Al2O3 glass system has been selected as a base glass system. Glass systems containing different amounts of Bi2O3 have been prepared by the convenient melting process. This work has been undertaken to study the advantages of using borosilicate glasses. with different quantities of Bi2O3 in the Composition as gamma-ray shields and also exploring their structural properties by using FTIR and Raman spectroscopyThe effect of Gamma-radiation on glass compositions by Infrared spectra has been investigated. X-ray diffraction results have revealed that there are no peaks related to the crystalline phase, Tg was determined by DTA analysis, the Density of each sample has been measured precisely to conform measured Tg outcome. In addition to the experimental studies, we used the Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport Code (MCNP) software package to simulate nuclear processes and the photon energy absorbance of prepared glasses. The glass composition containing SiO2, B2O3, and Bi2O3 with the best shielding properties against radiation has been achieved in this study.
