Abstract
The major goal of this review paper is to investigate the engineering properties of soil, which has weak bearing and shearing strength and requires stabilisation to be used for building. Coir fibre and alccofine are utilised in this investigation to stabilise the soil. Adding coir is an environmentally benign way to strengthen the soil, while alccofine serves as a strong binding agent. Alccofine is a highly processed material obtained from Ground Granulated Blastfurnace Slag (GGBS), the waste material generated from the iron ore industries. It is a fine powder. Alccofine, which is readily available and inexpensive, does not hurt the environment in the same way that chemical-based or synthetic fibres like polypropylene do, therefore it is an effort to maintain the balance of nature.
The virgin soil sample will be taken and conduct all the preliminary tests such as determination of water content, specific gravity, Atterberg’s limit tests, light compaction, Unconfined compressive strength test. After that the soil sample will be mixed with different percentage of alccofine (4%, 8%,10%) and conduct the above-mentioned tests, thereby find the optimum percentage of alccofine. Different percentage of coir fibre (0.5%, 1%, 1.25%) will be mixed with soil having optimum percentage of alccofine and repeat the same tests.
The results of various research papers on inclusion of coir fiber in alccofine stabilized soil is compared. From this research papers it is expected that the coir fibre added with alccofine stabilized soil will improve the properties of virgin soil.
