Abstract

This chapter maps a series of major developments relating to the private enforcement of the law of the European Union (EU), focussing on the provision of redress to victims of breaches of EU private law and the impact of Europeanization in this domain. It notes the adoption of various innovative techniques designed to deliver redress to aggrieved private parties at EU and national level. Seeking to achieve the desired outcome of redress, these techniques challenge the traditional distinction between public and private enforcement, notably the leading role of private law courts in the provision of redress. At the same time, however, the chapter shows that the public/private divide has not become entirely superfluous.
