Abstract

Academic research and management practice often consider data as facts. Yet, while data may function as representations of reality, data are also human creations that could have been otherwise. Recent sociotechnical literature on data has explored the production, sourcing, use, and reuse of data in practice, but the literature has a blind sport on how new valuable ways of rendering phenomena in data initially come to existence. We call this data innovation. Data innovation revolves on the constitution of semantic and syntactic rules that make it possible to record a certain type of data, and it stands out from digital innovation because of its ambivalent relationship with modularity. The study of data innovation can be motivated by potentially significant economic, strategic, or social value of new types of data. Therefore, we claim that data innovation has its own distinctive profile that merits to be analyzed and theorized on its own right and outline an agenda for the study of data innovation in practice.
