Abstract
In this study, a multifunctional Zn-containing layer was self-assembled on the external surface of the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO)-coated Mg during PEO process, enhancing corrosion resistance, antibacterial activity, and osteogenic property. The external Zn-containing layer composed of ZnO and Zn3(PO4)2 provided PEO coating with both increased thickness and improved chemical stability. The ZnO in the Zn-containing layer generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) under ultrasonic or UV stimulation, synergistically killing bacteria effectively. Controlled release of Zn2+ and Mg2+ ions from PEO-coated Mg promotes cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation. This study benefits the design of biological functional coating on Mg-based implant materials.
