Abstract

Hegel’s work has had a strong influence on the development of Western philosophy especially in the 19th Century. This article examines the potential contemporary contributions of his work beyond intellectual history. It considers three different illustrations – punishment, democratic engagement and jury trials – for how Hegel’s insights can offer compelling accounts for addressing current debates. Hegel’s work may be seen as too obscure by some, but its practical relevance for political and legal affairs is greater than has been realised previously.
