Abstract

Team building activities work towards greater organizational efficiency and productivity due to their positive effects on the relationships that thrive within the work setting. If organizations streamline team building as a regular part of their employee upskilling and development, workplace productivity is bound to occur. However, due to cost-related and efficiency-related issues in the country, the Philippine organizations are yet to cement team building as a regularly conducted potential source for growth in human resource development initiatives. Based on both qualitative and quantitative evidence about the positive effects of team-building activities on employee retention, engagement, and satisfaction, this systematic literature review recommends a contextualization of its effectivity in Philippine organizational settings, especially since team-building activities in the country are conducted within the broader framework of Philippine labor laws, occupational safety and health standards, and organizational policies. In particular, the studies point to three factors that are essential for consideration: (1) decision-making processes, (2) development of skills, and (3) perceptions of productivity. Recommendations to focus on these markers of team-building effectiveness would lead to a determination of the necessity of regularly conducting team-building activities for Philippine organizations and their quest for organizational efficiency.
