Abstract

Through interviews and research, we identify Germany's challenges in refugee integration post-WWII, underscored recently by its lackluster response to the Ukrainian refugee crisis. These testimonies and studies unveil a series of persistent barriers—ranging from language proficiency requirements to educational segregation—traced back to Germany's Gastarbeiter program and the stark disparities it created between immigrants and residents. Support measures traditionally lean heavily toward short-term interventions, offering only immediate palliatives rather than sustainable solutions. Additionally, even with national directives in place, there is a marked disparity in refugees' reception and integration experiences across Germany's federal states. Germany must transcend these historical shackles to craft a genuinely inclusive future, prioritizing long-term, comprehensive strategies over fleeting remedies.
