Abstract

This dissertation is on the sustainability of financial institutions, firms, and investing and contains four research chapters. In the first chapter, I study the influences of systematic risk hoarding of banks and insurance corporations on fire sales and financial stability. In the second chapter, I investigate how firms respond to imprecise pressure to become more sustainable and analyze its consequences on aggregate sustainable and financial performance. In the fourth and fifth chapters, I study the mechanisms of sustainable investing. In chapter four, I quantify the effectiveness of portfolio tilting in improving sustainable performance under information asymmetries. In the last chapter, I study the efficacy of socially responsible engagement using unique identification in the real estate market.
