Abstract
HIGHLIGHTS• Milk production modal systems of nine Latin America-Caribbean countries were analysed.• Honduras, Panamá, Nicaragua, Ecuador and Paraguay had similar and low productivity and profit but a low production cost.• Chile, Costa Rica, Argentina and Uruguay showed high productivity, profit, and herd size without increasing production cost.• Emissions intensity (CH4, N and P) and water use decreased with productivity, while CH4 per ha was below competitors.• This study shows pathways for regional or national programs to sustainably boost milk production in the region.
