Abstract

PET recycling and utilization offer both environmental benefits and economic advantages. In this study, PET underwent a catalytic reaction with Cr2O3/SiO2 at 180 °C and atmospheric pressure in ethylene glycol for 9 hours, resulting in an impressive BHET (bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate) yield of 91%. Catalyst recycling experiments demonstrated its robust stability and reusability. Infrared adsorption showed the formation of C-O...Cr bonds between C-O and Cr, where the Lewis acid sites depolymerized PET. This work presents a viable approach for the effective recycling and utilization of PET, showcasing the potential for sustainable management of PET waste.
