Abstract
Objective: To determine the epidemiological characteristics and influencing factors of road traffic injuries (RTIs) in Guangzhou, China. Methods: RTIs data were obtained from the Injury Surveillance System of Guangzhou in 2014–2018. Differences between demographics and RTIs were calculated using a chi-square test. Multiple logistic regression modeling was conducted to estimate the risk factors of RTIs in Guangzhou. Results: A total of 19,124 RTIs were reported by Injury Surveillance System of Guangzhou in 2014–2018. The male-to-female ratio of RTIs was 1.59:1. The RTIs occurred mainly in June to November, 20-year-olds working as businessmen and service staff, which mainly caused by motorcycles or electric bicycles and resulted in contusions or scratches in multiple site. Differences between age groups, census registration, occupation, educational level, alcohol consumption and RTIs were found by Chi-square test (P < 0.01). Regression results showed that male (adjusted OR: 1.07, 95% CI: 1.03-1.10), 10–69 years of age (age groups:≥10: 1.32, 1.15-1.51), June to November (1.05, 1.00-1.10), nonlocal residence registration (1.04, 1.01-1.08), businesspersons or service staff (1.09, 1.04-1.14), low education level (1.91, 1.70-2.14), and alcohol consumption (1.31, 1.23-1.40) were all significantly associated with increased risk of RTIs.Conclusion: RTIs is an important type of all injuries in Guangzhou, China. Those who have low education level, businesspersons or service staff, such as delivery drivers and motorcyclists are high risk population to RTIs. Meanwhile, alcohol consumption before injury is an important cause of injury. More effective injury prevention measures are needed to formulate and reduce risk behaviors.
