Abstract

Relations between the United States and China have become increasingly tense in recent years, and President Donald Trump declared an era of "Great Power Competition" with China in 2017. As tensions have risen, both countries have undertaken actions in order to reduce the power of the other, such as export restrictions or the trade war, which have further deteriorated relations and led to more tit for tat actions. This paper explores and examines the actions that have been taken by both countries, such as economic measures like sanctions and export restrictions on semiconductors and other technologies, and evaluates if they have indirectly led to negative implications on the world's ability to fight climate change, a problem of acute magnitude due to China and America's emissions. It begins with a brief summary of the surrounding context regarding the rising tensions between the US and China.
