Abstract

This paper conducts a systematic literature review on the determinants of legitimacy in participatory politics. Three main sources of legitimacy emerge from this empirical analysis; 1) institutions, 2) participation, and 3) deliberation. In addition, it is found that the issue of legitimacy plays a prominent role in authoritarian contexts. This especially applies to participatory experiences in the context of China.

Keywords: Legitimacy, democratic innovations, literature review, participation
