Reflecting and Relationship Building in Patients with Traumatic Life Experiences
16 Pages Posted: 6 Mar 2024
Abstract
Traumatic life experiences may disproportionately affect patients with social disparities or injustices. Understanding trauma-informed care is a basis for establishing a trusting therapeutic clinical relationship. Seemingly routine aspects of clinical care have the potential to retrigger trauma for patients. At the same time emotional responses can emerge in the NP providing care. This work uniquely connects the concepts of trauma-informed care with diversity/equity/inclusion, and the ethical duty to provide care for both patients and self. An evidence-based model to develop competence in self-reflection for improvement in patient-centered care, personal and professional development is provided.
