Abstract

Prompt Engineering is chiefly presented as a technique for improving the performance of large language models, and for increasing their alignment with the analogous choices of human subjects. This paper puts the approach upside down. It uses a technique that legal theorist Robert Alexy has proposed for deciding cases based on fundamental freedoms (his “Gewichtsformel”) as a system prompt for GPT. The alternative versions of the prompt do not only have a profound impact on outcomes. They also help rationalise the decision making process.
