Abstract

Democracy is in retreat globally. The third wave of autocratization is doing away with many of the democratic achievements made since the end of the Cold War, including guarantees of free and fair elections, civil liberties, the rule of law, media freedom, and freedom of speech. Supporting democracy in times of crisis not only protects and promotes fundamental democratic values, but also helps create a more secure, stable, and prosperous global arena in which the humankind can address today’s most urgent problems, such as global recession and climate change.

This report provides an overview of the global state of democracy. It discusses distinctive features of contemporary autocratization. It also looks closely at successful cases of reversing the global trend of autocratization and presents common elements that unite them. The report concludes with a set of valuable insights designed to help the international community and pro-democratic activists to better protect democracy.
