Abstract

In India, the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has long been a source of controversy. While some view it as a step in the direction of establishing gender justice and equality, others claim that it would impede people's right to practise their religion and cultural customs. The argument centres on the constitutional provision of secularism and whether the UCC is built on Hindu society, which has political implications. Despite advancements in its execution, there are still considerable obstacles to reaching an agreement among the many parties. This paper examines the difficulties the UCC faces, the differences between the present personal laws and the proposed unified code, and the drawbacks it would have. It also looks at how policymakers and other stakeholders contrast it with the concept of secularism.
