Abstract

This chapter examines the use of battered woman syndrome in Australian cases where women have been charged with an offence committed in response to, or under the influence of, domestic violence. It outlines the rationale for using battered woman syndrome and questions whether evidence concerning the syndrome has been effective in challenging gender bias in the law.

Keywords: battered woman syndrome, defences to homicide, violence against women
