Abstract
Ability of Balban can be assessed by the fact that he was called and given the responsibility during the time of crisis when the royal treasury was not having sufficient funds and army was unorganized. When Mongol invasion was on its high and the internal rebellions were frequent due to dissatisfaction, at such a critical stage, it was not easy for the Sultan to handle the administration efficiently. At this point of time, Balban emerged as a savior and thus won the hearts of eminent personalities in the region. Ascending the throne was a tough task for Balban as the prestige associated with the name of Sultan was lost in the eyes of people because rulers before Balban were not able enough to carry the aura of Sultan. But, Balban had different qualities which raised the status of Sultan. People started getting afraid of the administration and respected the ruler. Hereditary rule damaged the whole stature of administration as it is quite possible that son could not be able enough like father. With Balban, this tradition was broken and now, facts are the evidence of excellence of rule of Sultan. When he was young, he was captured by the Mongols and carried to Ghazni and sold to Khwaja Jamal-ud-din of Basra, a Sufi. It can be said after assessing the personality and life story of Balban that when there is no guidance or parenthood to any child, then child can deviate to any path very easily. These kinds of situations make person either broken or strengthened. Balban reduced the power of treacherous nobility as they became a threat in the path of the supremacy of Balban.
