Abstract

This paper examines the complex role of the bath kol in the Talmud: a divine voice that offers guidance, judgment, rebuke, and blessings. Serving as a connection between heaven and earth, the bath kol reflects God's ongoing communication with humanity. Numerous narratives are examined where the divine voice appears. Stories are categorized as follows: (1) Bath kol used in matters related to halacha (Jewish law); (2) Bath kol indicating who is destined for the world to come (paradise); (3) Bath kol providing a divine seal of approval; (4) Bath kol employed to reprimand, judge, or criticize; (5) Bath kol conveying divine indignation or astonishment at the disclosure of a heavenly mystery; and (6) Bath kol lamenting and displaying celestial regret.
