27 Pages Posted: 14 Feb 2025
Abstract
Highlights• Development of a portable directional eddy current probe for rail inspection.• High-speed test results were validated by comparison with ultrasonic results.• Dynamic measurement results were enabled by integrating the system with a hand-push device.• The eddy current system demonstrated decreased sensitivity to microstructural variations in rail steel.• Detection of local rail damages was achieved with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) greater than 4.5.
Keywords: eddy current testing (ECT), in-line inspection, rail health monitoring system, signal-to-noise ratio, non-destructive testing (NDT) method
