Abstract

The study surveyed the influence of parental involvement and peer group on academic performance of students of Girei Local Government with reference to Basic Science. The study adopted a dual research design, with a structured questionnaire. The study has 88 sampled size and employed the SPSS tools for its data analysis and the PPMC and linear regression in testing the null hypothesis. The findings of the study are: there is significant relationship between parental involvement and students’ academic performance in Basic Science, (F(86, 1)=126.684, p<0.05, there is significant relationship between peer group and students’ academic performance in Basic Science, (F(86, 1)=12.288, p<0.05 and there is significant relationship between parental involvement, peer group and students’ academic performance in Basic Science, (F(86, 2)=63.254, p<0.05. It is recommended among others that the government and ministry of education should ensure that trained counselors are posted in all schools and colleges so as to provide preventive counseling services and modify the bahaviours of the students who perchance have been negatively influenced by peers.
