Socio-Cultural and Spatial Transformation of Public Spaces in an Old Chinese Neighbourhood: A Case of Ma’An Neighbourhood in Chengdu, China

Abstract
The socio-cultural and spatial transformation of public spaces in rapidly urbanizing contexts raises critical questions about their role in fostering community cohesion. In Chengdu’s partially renovated Ma’an neighbourhood, these transformations reflect tensions between modernization and cultural heritage preservation, highlighting a gap in understanding how such spaces adapt under urban reforms. This study investigates the evolution of five key public space typologies—street frontages, public open spaces, public green spaces, semi-public areas, and corridor spaces—using a mixed-methods approach. Historical mapping, urban morphometric analysis, field observations, and informal stakeholder conversations were employed to capture both tangible spatial changes and intangible socio-cultural dynamics. Findings reveal significant shifts in the configuration and function of public spaces, with traditional spaces adapting to modern urban demands while retaining socio-cultural relevance. New spatial patterns have emerged, impacting accessibility and community identity. The analysis provides a framework for understanding these dynamics and balancing modernization with heritage preservation. This research contributes to establish a neighbourhood public space classification framework in conjunction with urban planning discourse by integrating existing public space theories, spatial analysis with socio-cultural insights, offering suggestions on urban regeneration decision making. It highlights the importance of regeneration projects that prioritize inclusivity, accessibility, and community cohesion in rapidly evolving urban environments.
