Abstract
The article provides a theoretical overview of the principles of the New French Sociology, from which it analyzes the management of urban public transportation, specifically in relation to its existence under private or public management conditions. It argues that private management of transportation implies a “reactive” type of management as opposed to an “active” management when the State, through local governments, fulfills this role. Historical cases related to the management of urban public transportation, both private and public, are examined, and reflections are made on the strengths and areas of opportunity of different management approaches.
