Abstract

This study investigates the challenges faced by local producers in Türkiye’s earthquake-affected region following the February 6, 2023 earthquakes and examines consumer preferences regarding purchasing products from the specific area. It aims to provide insights into the sustainable development of local producers after disasters and raise awareness about the economic and social barriers they encounter. Using the Systemic Design approach, the study evaluates the current state of local producers and identifies the lack of consumer demand as a major obstacle to recovery. To better understand this issue, a global survey was conducted to explore consumer perceptions, preferences, and motivations when purchasing or avoiding products from the affected region. The results highlight key concerns influencing consumer behavior, including trust, quality perception, and economic conditions. Based on the findings, the study proposes strategic recommendations to address these challenges and foster a resilient, sustainable development suggestions for disaster-affected communities. It emphasizes the role of consumers, policymakers, and other stakeholders in shaping long-term recovery efforts. Furthermore, by focusing on a specific disaster case, the study contributes to broader discussions on post-disaster economic resilience and sustainability, offering insights for affected communities, practitioners, researchers, and decision-makers. Starting from a specific region, this research sheds light on the intersection of consumer behavior, disaster recovery, and economic sustainability, providing a framework that can inform future global efforts in supporting disaster-affected regions.
