Abstract

The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 13 seeks the international community to prioritise and tackle climate change. However, the impact of climate change continues to worsen in recent times, raising a strong question regarding global commitment. This matter has recently become more concerning, as the United States under President Donald Trump clearly intends to pull out of the Paris Agreement. Sadly, developing African countries like Nigeria despite their huge economic potential, have remained vulnerable to climate change due to increased greenhouse gas emissions from countries like the US. This has made Nigeria to continually witness increased flooding, communal displacements, insecurity, low agricultural outputs as well as drought especially in the arid areas of the country. This essay explores the impact of climate change on Nigeria's socio-economy, and the factors hindering climate change mitigation in the country. It then concludes by providing recommendations towards attaining sustainable climate mitigation in Nigeria.
