Abstract

The article explores the intricate calculus of populism and diplomacy in South Asia. It claims that the growth of populism, a view that has expressed itself through nationalism and divisive rhetoric, has caused a strain on bilateral relations and slowed down regional cooperation. The paper adopts a constructivist perspective to examine how the images and political styles of populist leaders influence the foreign policy preferences of the region. The findings of this study indicate that populist influences on foreign policy manifest in policy framing and domestic support mobilization. It also stresses the value of home-based framing regarding the impact of populism on FP discourse, an under-researched area. The paper recommends strengthening regional dialogues, promoting inclusive policies, and developing people-to-people contact to foster trusting, constructive engagement among South Asian states and meet populism's challenges.
