Electric Potential in Multi-Ion Membrane Systems

5 Pages Posted: 14 May 2025

Abstract

Goldman-Hodgkin-Katz equation is used in membrane biophysics and bioelectrochemistry to describe transmembrane electric potential for solutions with K+, Na+ and Cl-. It is based on assumption that Nernst-Planck equation for one ion is valid also for each ion in a multicomponent system and does not consider mutual influence of transported ions via total electric potential. Here we suggest a simple equation for final transmembrane electric potential difference at zero current when this potential is a function of transport of all ions simultaneously
