Abstract
This article explores the transformative potential of the One Village One Product (OVOP) movement in addressing rural-urban disparities and promoting grassroots economic development. Originating in Japan’s Oita Prefecture in 1979, OVOP empowers rural communities to develop unique, high-quality products rooted in local resources and culture. The movement emphasizes self-reliance, global competitiveness, and human resource development. Through case studies from countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Colombia, Malawi, and Peru, the article highlights both the successes and challenges of implementing OVOP globally. While some regions have turned local products into global exports and tourism magnets, others have struggled due to inadequate infrastructure, limited funding, and top-down governance. Despite these barriers, the article argues that with community-driven strategies, strong institutional support, and inclusive policies, OVOP can serve as a powerful model for sustainable rural development and economic empowerment across developing nations.
