Abstract

In 2024, the UK became the first country to implement a dual RSV vaccination programme targeting both pregnant women and older adults. This commentary analyses the implementation strategy, early outcomes, and implications for global health immunisation strategies. Leveraging their existing infrastructure, from procurement to implementation, the rollout achieved over one million vaccinations within winter months. Early surveillance indicated a reduced in RSV-related hospitalisations. However, challenges were reported including low public awareness and complex logistical demands. With the phased rollout framework, the UK provides a practical model for integrated, cost-effective immunisation in a timely manner. As RSV vaccine access expands globally following WHO’s approval, lessons from the UK’s data-first strategy can inform equitable, scalable rollout in both high- and low-income countries.
