Abstract

The paper reviews the most important agricultural policies that affect the farm economy in California. We provide calculations of Producer Subsidy Equivalents (PSE's) for all significant commodities or commodity groups produced in the state. Subsidy rates range from about 70 percent for sugar beets to about 3 or 4 percent for many vegetables and horticultural crops. Dairy, the largest commodity has a PSE of about 35 percent.
