David Levine, vice president of the nonprofit organization Israel Cancer Association (ICA) and director of its annual fundraiser, has just finished watching a relatively new but well-respected muckraking television show called Fact. The program presented a report on the corruption plaguing a major Israeli nonprofit organization. In a simple and convincing manner, Fact contended that the money donated for years by Israeli citizens to soldiers' foundations was used for administrative costs and expense accounts; only a small portion benefited the soldiers. In the A case, Levine speculates on how Fact's report might reflect on his own organization and the financial ramifications it might hold for ICA's forthcoming annual fundraising drive. He does not look forward to tomorrow's meeting with his administrative staff, including his public-relations and marketing groups, concerning whether they should respond to the television report. The B case (UVA-BC-0144) presents the options that the executive team considers. The case series ends with management's decision not to issue a formal response to the report.
