Abstract

This paper sought to emphasize the importance of public sector management against the fight against corruption and poverty in attempts toward the achievement of sustainable development in Nigeria. Fighting corruption and reducing poverty is the best starting point for the diversification of the economy and sustainable development in sub-Saharan Africa where most of the 3billion poor people in the world live. Corruption leads to poverty and also among the major causes of public financial recklessness, bad business ethics, weak manufacturing and industrial sectors low foreign investments, among others. The paper believed that the fight should be everyone’s concern especially now that the global cost of corruption is about US$2.6trillion per annum and the world is keen in sustainable development goals (SDGs) by 2030. Corruption in Nigeria has become most blatant with the evidence of big people at the corridors of power gathering together to share public funds for private gains, which suggested serious syndromes of corruption, greed for wealth and power in a very weak economy and presidential democracy, as a result of entrenched weak public sector management.
