Abstract
Sustainable and affordable housing is a grand creative challenge with far-reaching social, economic, and environmental implications. This paper presents a comprehensive framework for understanding the complex factors that shape housing affordability and sustainability. The framework identifies six key aspects: market conditions, place and localness, regulatory regimes and incentives, sociocultural issues, emergent technologies such as AI, and Earth's limitations. This holistic view enables a deeper examination of the interplay between factors such as consumer preferences, producer behavior, government policies, and evolving societal trends. The paper analyzes the current housing crisis, highlighting the imbalance between supply and demand that has led to escalating costs. It emphasizes the need for innovative housing solutions that are environmentally responsible, tailored to the specific needs of local communities and regions, and promote social equity. The framework serves as a tool for exploring strategies to foster economic revitalization, address the unique housing challenges faced by communities, and ensure a sustainable future with improved access to affordable housing that meets social expectations for health, safety, and welfare.
