Abstract

This paper examines the distinction between organizational agreement and interpretive alignment, two conditions frequently conflated in leadership practice but producing fundamentally different organizational outcomes. Drawing on the Organizational Meaning Science™ framework and 30+ years of organizational leadership experience across Gallup, L'Oréal, Johnson & Johnson, Pierre Fabre, and Sandoz Biopharmaceuticals, this paper argues that agreement reflects a momentary convergence of expressed positions, while alignment reflects a shared interpretive framework through which meaning is formed, held, and acted upon consistently over time. Leaders routinely mistake the former for the latter, resulting in strategy that does not move, culture that does not hold, and change that does not sustain. The paper explores the mechanisms by which meaning diverges even when agreement appears unanimous, with illustrative organizational scenarios and a framework for diagnosing and closing the interpretive gap. Particular reference is made to the ITES™ (Interpretation Through Experience Scale) instrument as a diagnostic tool for surfacing interpretive patterns in organizational environments.
