Abstract

South Africa is a country in transition and is facing on-going challenges with regard to ways in which to generate and maintain processes that restore dignity and create political and economic equality and promote a culture of human rights (sometimes in racially-charged environments). The purpose of this note is to evaluate racism in the context of the workplace and to suggest ways in which employers may wish to manage instances of racism. Responsible employers are not only tasked with creating organisations that advocate and practice social justice, but also with introducing behavioural policies in terms of which the offence of racial abuse could attract a sanction of dismissal, even for a first offence due to the seriousness of the misconduct.

Keywords: racism, workplace, employer liability
