Abstract

While the COVID-19 pandemic greatly affected every part of the United States in numerous ways, a new study finds Western and Southern states experienced more COVID-19-related deaths than Northern and Eastern states.
A recent Policy Spotlight, published by the University of Illinois System’s Institute of Government and Public Affairs titled “Geographic differences in the mortality burden of the COVID-19 pandemic” tracks the number of COVID-19-related deaths in each state and region of the US from April 2020 to December 2022. Researchers analyzed the disparities in the mortality burden felt in each state and region, as well as how these lost lives may have impacted government finances.
