38 Pages Posted: 1 Apr 2025
Abstract
This study provides a critical bibliometric analysis of Innovation District (ID) research, reviewing 1327 publications from 1975 to 2024 in the Web of Science. CiteSpace visualization reveals key trends, identifies influential contributors, and highlights emerging themes. The analysis traces the evolution of IDs from isolated science parks to integrated urban ecosystems that align economic, social, and environmental objectives. Findings highlight IDs’ growing role as hubs for sustainable and inclusive urban growth, drawing on insights from diverse fields such as urban planning, economics, and environmental science. Based on the findings, this study summarizes the multidimensional development trends in ID research and introduces a comprehensive and future-oriented for IDs. This framework integrates five core chains within IDs, including services, industries, innovation, talent, and funding, while also considering four key external environmental dimensions: local context, technology push, multi-stakeholder governance, and sustainability.
