Abstract

This policy paper explores the fragmented sustainability landscape in Switzerland’s fish market. Based on interviews, surveys, and trade law analysis, the authors highlight how unclear definitions, a proliferation of private labels, and minimal regulatory oversight create confusion and limit accountability in sustainable fish sourcing. They call for a more active role by the state to establish clear, inclusive, and enforceable standards that complement private initiatives. The paper contributes to the debate on how trade policy and public procurement can better support sustainability goals in global food systems.
