Abstract
In examining the evolution of social capital in Argentina since the return of democracy, it appears that its two main components, participation in voluntary organizations and trust in others, have followed divergent paths. While participation in associations increases, trust decreases. In the studied period, the insertion in voluntary organizations does not appear causally related to interpersonal trust. In contrast, the regression models suggest that a loss of confidence in political institutions had the effect of reducing interpersonal trust, by adversely affecting the perceived reliability of the social environment. Religious faith and democratic values are determinants of trust in others; education, interest in politics and, again, religion, are determinants of civic engagement.
